The Four Ages (1.2) Ovid Metamorphoses

quattor ætates. gigantes.
The Four Ages. The Giants: Sons of Earth.

aurea prima sata est ætas quæ vindice nullo,

sponte sua, sine lege fidem rectumque colebat.
T is golden: the first age, by being sown,
Which with no champion, was out of control,
Yet by God’s will, His trustworthiness, faith,
Was of men honoured, by being kept straight.

pœna metusque aberant, nec verba minantia fixo

ære legebantur, nec supplex turba timebant
iudicis ora sui, sed erant sine vindice tuti.
With the fear of punishment they kept clear,
But not a descended language be’ng established,
With the clouds, they were being gatherēd,
Nor suppliant with riots were afeared,
The Golden Age of judgements, their proper rights,
But they were without a champion in sight,
Of to whom, by having been protected.
